The
Northern Ontario School of Medicine will
soon be training medical students using the facilities of
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. This is a welcome
development as our area of Canada is especially short of family
physicians. It is estimated that there are thirty to forty
thousand “orphan” patients (no family physician)
in Thunder Bay alone. It is expected that many medical students
trained in Northwestern Ontario will stay to enjoy their medical
practice coupled with a great lifestyle. Thunder Bay will
accept 24 students per year until the four-year program sees
its first graduates. A post graduate program is also planned
to further enhance the learning and practice opportunities
of physicians and researchers.
