It is now two years. Yes, TWO YEARS! Congratulations to everyone
who helped a vision become a reality. The physicians, staff,
and volunteers of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
are celebrating their second birthday in this state-of-the-art
acute care Health Sciences Centre.
On February 22, 2004, we began moving patients to our new
facility. The move made possible a major shift in service
from two sites to one. The change was significant as the one
site consolidated services for Thunder Bay and Northwestern
Ontario. In fact, there have been many changes over the last
couple of years.
The move to one site fulfilled a major initiative of Members
of the Board that started back in the 1990’s. Now, we
celebrate an integrated Cancer Care Service, a Forensics Service,
an Adolescent Psychiatric Service, and an expanding Diagnostic
Imaging Department using two MRIs, and three CT Scans. As
well, Cardiac Care has placed new equipment in the Cath Lab
and is looking to expand services there.
Furthermore, the ICU has moved to an Intensivist model of
care. The Electronic Medical Record has been “rolled
out” to the City and to some regional hospitals. Film-free,
the Picture Archival Communications System digitizes images
for easy access and distribution. Telehealth plays a significant
role in allowing specialists quick and easy access to patients
living in the region. Progress in an eLearning environment
is substantial.
As medical students make their way through the Northern Ontario
School of Medicine, we are excited to be a key partner in
the development of physicians for our region. Furthermore,
our research programs are expanding with international interest
in what we are doing.
There are numerous new services and many new employees and
associates from the community and region helping us achieve
a world-class service. We are proud of our first two years.
The future looks very promising. We thank you for your continuing
support.
