Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is “Officially
Open”.
 On
Monday, May 31, 2004, the Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier
of Ontario, the Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of
Health and Long-term Care, Dr. Alan Hudson, President and
CEO of Cancer Care Ontario, along with other numerous dignitaries,
came to Thunder Bay to celebrate - amid trumpet fanfare and
the skirl of bagpipes – the Official Opening of the
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Extolling its virtues, the guests of honour spoke highly
of the “ fantastic, tremendous, extraordinary and wonderful”
facility. For example, Health Minister Smitherman called the
Health Sciences Centre “the pride and joy of the Ontario
healthcare system.”
Significantly, Premier McGuinty announced that his government
was “making an unprecedented commitment to cover 80
percent of the shareable costs for the Thunder Bay Regional
Health Sciences Centre.” In his address he said, “we
believe that as a matter of fairness, given the overall cost
of the project, given the capacity of this community to raise
money and given the fact this hospital will serve the Northwest
Region of Ontario, we should cover 80 per cent of the cost
and not the traditional 70 percent.”
