Less than one hour before its first Annual General Meeting,
the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute celebrated yet
another success with the presentation of a $500,000 Cancer
Care Ontario Research Chair Award.
Dr. Joseph Pater, Vice President, Clinical and Translational
Research for Cancer Care Ontario (CCO), officially unveiled
the new CCO Research Chairs program and announced the Thunder
Bay Regional Research Institute as one of seven award recipients
in Ontario. The program, funded by the Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care, is designed to engage new scientists in
cancer research in Ontario and to support outstanding scientists
already working in the field.
 |
“Research plays
an important role in preventing the onset of cancer
and improving services for those who develop the disease,”
Dr. Pater said. “The Thunder Bay Regional Research
Institute is an asset for the entire cancer system,
and CCO is pleased to support it with a CCO Research
Chair as it continues to grow and develop.”

Dr. John Rowlands, Founding Scientific Director
for the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, accepted
the award on behalf of the Institute. He said it will be
used to aid in recruitment for the Molecular Imaging and
Advanced Diagnostics Research Program of the Research Institute
(formerly known as the MMRC).
 |
“With molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics
as the overall focus, the program will be organized
around three core themes: Advanced Detection Devices,
Biomarker Discovery, and Imaging Guided Interventions.
The CCO Research Chair will be used to recruit a
Radiation Oncology Clinician Scientist who will
work in the clinical aspects of the Research Institute,”
Dr. Rowlands said.

Mr. Keith Jobbitt, Chair of the Board of Directors for the
Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, said the CCO Research
Chair announcement reflects both the Research Institute’s
success over the past year and the future directions mapped
out in the Institute’s first Strategic Plan, which was
also revealed today.
 |
“The Thunder Bay
Regional Research Institute has a clear vision: we
will transform patient care at Thunder Bay Regional
Health Sciences Centre and beyond through patient-centred
research. This means all research done at the Research
Institute will be motivated by patient needs, which
is quite a unique mandate in the scientific arena,”
Mr. Jobbitt said.
|
 |
“The CCO Research
Chair Announcement further demonstrates confidence
in our Strategic Plan and in our Research Institute
team. Partnerships like the one established with CCO,
coupled with the outstanding recruitment efforts of
Dr. Rowlands and Dr. Mark Poznansky, Chief Research
Officer, will ensure our success in achieving our
goals over the next five years,” said Mr. Michael
Power, CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute
and Vice President of Regional Cancer and Diagnostic
Services, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
