TBRHSC Opens Child and Adolescent Specialize Mental Health Unit

Child and Adolescent Unit Opens Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseThe opening of the Child and Adolescent, Specialized Mental Health Unit at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre marked a significant milestone. Planning for this Unit started back in 1996. Following numerous revisions to the plan, funding was finally approved and staff recruited. The eight bed Unit complements the existing Adult Mental Health and Paediatric programs at TBRHSC.

 

The Unit is a regional resource serving the Districts of Thunder Bay and Kenora/Rainy River, that is, from White River to the Ontario/Manitoba border.

 

The Unit provides services relating to stabilization, comprehensive assessments and brief treatment for youth with serious and complex mental health problems. The patient age range is from 12-17 years.

 

Patients might receive Risk Assessment, Psychological Assessment, Individual and Group Psychotherapy, Short Term Behavioral Interventions, Psychosocial Information, Psychiatric Evaluation, Trauma Evaluation, Family counseling, Stress Management techniques, and Social Skill training.

 

The Child and Adolescent, Specialized Mental Health Unit is comprised of a Multidisciplinary team of healthcare workers including: Child Psychiatrists, Social Worker, Registered Nurses, Child Youth Workers, Unit Coordinator, Psychological Associate, Registered Practical Nurses, Cultural Liaison Worker, and Secretary.

 

It is expected that the average length of stay for patients will be two weeks.
