Today
an Expert Panel confirmed the high caliber of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s (TBRHSC) Angioplasty Program. Dr.
Bernard Goldman, Chair, Stand Alone Angioplasty Expert Panel, states, “The quality of care here matches anything you would find
in Canada. This team has created a model program.”
 |
The TBRHSC Stand Alone Angioplasty program is the most remote program in Canada, located more than
200 miles from the closest full-service cardiac centre and the first approved in the Province. The Expert Panel, including respected
cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from across the Province, was established by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to
monitor the new program’s safety, effectiveness and sustainability. The Panel’s conclusion is that “the Angioplasty
Program at TBRHSC is providing excellent service and exemplary care to the residents of Northwestern Ontario.”
|
The Panel also notes that TBRHSC’s Angioplasty Program demonstrates inter-facility and inter-disciplinary collaboration,
safe patient selection, positive clinical outcomes, achievement of target volumes, medical staff recruitment and community support.
 |
TBRHSC Vice-President Lori Marshall says she is “delighted with the Angioplasty Program’s success. The External
Panel’s efforts have validated that safety and quality can be integral to a philosophy of care closer to home.”

Dr. Mark Henderson was recruited to Thunder Bay as the program’s Medical Director and first
Interventional Cardiologist. He says, “Patients benefit from reduced delays, excellent care and low complication rates.”
With the recruitment of the second interventional cardiologist, Dr. Ian Billingsley, the program will continue to grow. Construction
on the second cardiac catheterization laboratory will be completed by the summer of 2011. In the mean time, TBRHSC will meet
patient need by establishing a temporary suite in the diagnostic area.

Glenn Craig, President & CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, says today's announcement confirms that donations
in support of local cardiac care realize a positive return on investment. He says, “The generous people who enable successes like
the Angioplasty Program are vital partners in patient care”.
Liberal MPP for Thunder Bay/Atikokan, Bill Mauro says, “This Letter of Commendation is gratifying and demonstrates that the commitment
this Government made to advanced cardiac care for the people of Northwestern Ontario was the right thing to do.”
Ron Saddington, TBRHSC President and CEO noted that, “It is gratifying to know that Cardiac Care for our local and regional patients
and families is regarded as ’leading edge’. Lives are being saved and quality of life is being restored. Our plans for Cardiac
Care may one day include surgical intervention. We proceed one step at a time”.
