First HD Minimally Invasive Surgical Suites in Canada
April 3, 2008
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is pleased
to announce the successful “leading edge”
transformation of two of our Operating Rooms. We have
now upgraded them into fully-integrated, minimally invasive
Surgical Suites.
Minimally invasive surgery is fast becoming the standard
of care for many procedures. It generally means smaller
incisions, less scarring and trauma to the patient,
leading to quicker post-surgical recovery times.
With these new suites, TBRHSC is now on the cutting
edge.
These two suites have the first 1080p fibre-based HD digital
integrated system in an MIS Suite in Canada with true high
definition picture and video quality.
This will allow our surgeons better visualization leading
to improved surgical outcomes. As well, the integration of
the Suite will save time on setup and changeover between cases,
allowing for greater surgical capacity. Finally, the ability
to teleconference will enhance our teaching and learning opportunities,
helping to fulfill our mandate of becoming a world-class healthcare
facility.
As a result of donations from the community, the Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation will provide $320,000
to help fund the minimally invasive Operating Suites. The
Health Sciences Foundation raises funds to support the Health
Sciences Centre in their progressive pursuit of innovative
options to advance patient care for the people of Northwestern
Ontario.
