Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseOn Saturday, August 23, thousands gathered to take in the sights and sounds of Motors & Muscles, a popular event in support of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation and presented by Thunder Bay Insurance.

The event featured a Strong Man competition, in which competitors tackled weight lifting, throws, 750 lbs-tire flipping and other physically demanding tasks. The firstplace winner of the Strong Man competition was Jeff Vanco.

In the Biker Games, teams of two demonstrated their biking skills, balance, steering precision at slow speeds, and overall coordination. Mandie Ciotucha and Frank Muzzi earned top marks in the Biker Games.

At approximately 11:00 pm, the Motors & Muscles raffle grand prize draw took place. Ryan Remenda is the proud new owner of a 2008 Harley Davidson FLHR Road King, valued at $24,492.

Overall, approximately $45,000 (net) was raised in support of excellence in cardiac care for the people of Northwestern Ontario. Proceeds will help to purchase the medical equipment required for a second Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, expanding the number of angioplasties performed each year from 250 to over 500. Without the second Lab, hundreds of cardiac patients will still be required to travel to centres outside of our region to receive angioplasty services.

Motors & Muscles presenting sponsor David Baxter of Thunder Bay Insurance applauds the community for ensuring the success of the unique event. “It is vital to the people of our community that angioplasty is accessible when it’s needed most,” he says. “As a local business, we chose to lend our support to this important cause and are thrilled that so many others contributed by participating.”

As event Chair and member of the Health Sciences Foundation board, John Trevisanutto praises the many sponsors and volunteers who made the third annual Motors & Muscles a reality. “When the second Cardiac Catheterization Lab is built and 500 patients are able access angioplasty close to home, the individuals involved in this event can take pride in knowing they helped make it possible,” he says.

Motors & Muscles supports of the Northern Cardiac Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. 100% of funds raised remain in Northwestern Ontario.
