A
portion of your heart muscle may have been damaged by the infarction. After
this sudden event, the body starts healing and strengthening the affected part
of the heart muscle.
The first week is crucial since the heart must maintain its normal functions despite the traumatic accident. It is easy to understand how important it is to have a calm and relaxing environment where the heart can rest after the acute phase of pain.
From the second week on, the healing process is under way and will progress through the following weeks. Convalescence, in this case, means a gradual return to physical activities.
The healing period should take from 6 to 12 weeks.
During this period you may experience feelings of weakness, fatigue, frustration and irritation. You may feel that you have lost control of your life. It is important to recognize and discuss these feelings. Do not hesitate to discuss matters with your physician, nurse, hospital social worker, family member or friend, support groups, or counsellor.
