Diagnostic Imaging

diagnostic01Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseThe Department of Diagnostic Imaging encompasses the modalities of X-ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography scan (CT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, nuclear medicine and angiography. The department is composed of approximately 120 staff, six full time radiologists and several part time physicians who perform and report many of the above procedures. The diagnostic imaging department performs 149,000 procedures yearly.

The diagnostic imaging team at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre will utilize almost entirely new state-of-the-art equipment. The new equipment will include: two C.T. Scanners, an M.R.I., four nuclear medicine cameras, seven stationary ultrasound machines, two portable ultrasound machines, ten x-ray rooms and eight portable X-ray units. No traditional film will be used in the department. All diagnostic equipment will be capable of digital imaging with the results viewed on computers. This process allows for all images to be sent from the Diagnostic Imaging Department to all the other departments throughout the Health Sciences Centre for instant viewing. Additionally, images will be able to be viewed not only in a doctor's office in the city or region, but they can be sent to other hospitals for consultation.

diagnostic02The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre will provide an educational component within the Diagnostic Imaging Department. Radiography, ultrasound and M.R.I students will be trained in the new technologies, with the hope that they will remain in the North.

The Department of Diagnostic Imaging is also a member of the North Network, which provides a means of transmitting diagnostic images from remote sites in the region to medical facilities where a radiologist can be reached for consultation. There are presently eighteen member sites located throughout the Northwest.

TBRHSC is proud to provide a Virtual Tour of Diagnostic Imaging. The VR Tour has been optimized for viewing with Internet Explorer as your web browser. At the present time, the Virtual Tour is not able to be viewed with the browser Firefox. Click here if you have problems viewing the VR Tour.
