The Hospitalist Program

hospitalistClick to listen to this page using ReadPleaseThe Hospitalist Program at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre was implemented in January 2002. Hospitalists serve as “Most Responsible Physicians” (MRP) for any “orphan” adult medical patients over the age of 17 years, “who do not have a family physician or a family physician without privileges at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre”. The Hospitalists Program is a 24-hour service that is comprised of both Internists and General Practitioners. The Hospitalists also provide supportive medical care to Adult Mental Health patients, where the Psychiatrist assumes the role as MRP. The Hospitalists provide short term out-patient care, specifically related to their admission diagnosis, through the Chronic Disease Management Clinic for those patients who are “orphaned” and do not have a family physician.

Over the past fiscal year, the Hospitalist Program cared for 3436 admissions. Average daily census for the program runs between 134-155 patients, 80–100 of which are acute care, 20-25 patients require supportive mental health care and 30 patients are waiting for an Alternative Level of Care (ALC).
