Averages
of 1650 – 1700 babies are born every year in our new,
beautifully designed Labour and Delivery unit.
Our very specialized team provides individualized care for
mothers and their babies during labour, birth and recovery.
Our 7 private birthing rooms provide a relaxing and comfortable
environment for labour and birth. Each of our very spacious
birthing rooms are equipped with a birthing bed, fetal monitor
and infant care unit. All rooms have their own washrooms complete
with showers and whirlpool baths.
A range of pain relief options are available, ranging from
whirlpool baths, relaxation techniques, massage, positioning,
narcotic pain relief, nitrous oxide (laughing gas). A referral
to an anesthetist may be necessary; this is determined by
your care provider. One on one nursing care is provided in
active labour.
Two fully equipped operating rooms are located within the
labour and delivery unit for high-risk deliveries, emergency
and elective cesarean sections.
Breastfeeding, as recommended by the Canadian Institute of
Child Health, Health Canada and the World Health Organization
is supported at TBRHSC. Education and support are provided
to all parents for their baby feeding method of choice.
The Labour and Delivery private entrance is exclusively for
expectant mothers over 20 weeks gestation requiring non-stress
testing; assessment of pregnancy; assessment of labour; pre-admission
visits for booked Caesarian Sections and booked induction
of labour. People wishing to visit the Mother
Baby Combined Care unit must enter the hospital from the
main entrance and then proceed to the Mother Baby Combined
Care unit entrance.
- 2 support people per patient – must be same two throughout
labour/delivery

- Siblings may be allowed to attend birth by pre-arrangement
and in compliance with department policy
